Applying to Colleges/Universities with an OSSD
Toronto eLearning School students who have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) can apply to Colleges or Universities in Canada and all over the world as an Ontario high school graduate.
The requirements for applying to an Ontario College or University as following:
. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
. Six 4U (Grade 12 University Preparation) or 4M (Grade 12 University/College) courses.
. ENG4U is required for all university academic programs. Most also have course specific requirements which may require one or two Grade 12 math courses as well.
. English Language Proficiency Level IELTS score of 6.0 for College and 6.5 for University. Students with a score 5.0-6.0 may be eligible for admission into a combined ESL and degree programs.
. The admission average for College/University programs can be as low as 60-70%. But most highly competitive programs have admission averages ranging from 80% to 95%.
. Some programs require students to submit personal profiles, essays or videos as part of the application process.
. Students with an OSSD apply to an Ontario College/University through the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS), or the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). Student marks will be entered into OUAC system directly by Toronto eLearning School.
Applying Online to Ontario’s Universities
To apply to an Ontario university, you must submit your application to the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). The OUAC processes application for all Ontario universities.
The deadline to apply depends on whether you are currently in high school, and which kind of program you are applying to. For example, professional programs usually have different deadlines than undergraduate (Bachelor’s) programs. You can find information about application deadlines on the OUAC AND GRADUATION TIMELINE.
To apply to an Ontario college, you must submit your application to the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS). OCAS processes the applications for public colleges in Ontario. If you are accepted to a college, you also send your response to the OCAS. The OCAS will respond to the college for you. Unlike universities, colleges do not have the same kind of final application deadline. Generally, colleges consider all applications that they receive by a certain date together; after that date, they consider applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Step 1: Research Your University Options
. Do some research on the university website.
. Review the Undergraduate Application Guide on ouac.on.ca
. Check the Undergraduate – Key Dates on ouac.on.ca for important deadlines.
Step 2: Be Prepared
. Gather the information you need to apply.
. If you are a current Ontario high school student: You will need your Ontario Education Number (OEN) to apply. You can find your OEN on your report card. Your high school guidance counsellor will also have it on record.
Step 3: Apply
. Create your OUAC account if you do not already have one and record your username and password and keep them in a safe place. .
. Complete all sections of the online application.
. Complete all 4 steps in Review and Payment.
1). Review Summary: Review your program selections and all other information you provided in your application.
2). Declaration: Read the Applicant’s Declaration before clicking “I Verify and Agree”.
3). Payment: Pay for your application.
4). Confirmation: Get your OUAC Reference Number, confirmation email and next steps.
. Submit your application, with payment, well before the deadlines that apply to you. Record your OUAC Reference Number and keep it in a safe place.
Step 4: After Submission
. Log in to your application to verify the details. Review and make any necessary changes.
. Ensure your spam filters are set to accept email from the OUAC and the universities you applied to. Email is the primary mode of communication for the universities and the OUAC.
. The universities will acknowledge that they received your application. Depending on the time of year, this might take up to 2 weeks.
Applying to a Canadian University Outside of Ontario
To apply to universities outside of Ontario, you must apply through the university admissions office itself. Each university will require a fee for sending in your application, which includes your high school transcript complete with all of your grades. University websites will often feature an application page with forms to fill out, along with your transcript. Some universities will require you to fill out additional information regarding your extracurricular activities and community involvement. Applications can be sent online with the use of a credit card to account for processing fees. In most cases, these fees are non-refundable.
Ontario secondary school students, applying to the following listed Canadian universities outside of Ontario, can authorize the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) to transfer their academic data to the listed out-of-province university.

Students who complete an application form for these Outside of Ontario universities can provide authorization for a university to request their academic information from the OUAC. To provide authorization, the applicant must include their 11-digit OUAC Reference Number on the institution’s application form. Note: In all cases, the eleventh digit should be “0”.
Step 1: Do University Research
. Go to university websites: http://www.universitystudy.ca
. Select 5-10 programs of interest and review their admissions on the websites.
. Consulting with TES teachers and guidance counsellors about your selections.
Step 2: Be Prepared
. High school transcripts from grades 9-12.
. List of any extra curricular activities and awards if any.
. IELTS/TOFEL Test Scores.
. Personal statements and portfolio work.
. Additional documents (such as passport, criminal records and reference letter).
Step 3: Submit Your Application
. Apply directly on the university website with the required documents and payment.
. The above listed Outside of Ontario Universities receive electronic grades from OUAC
Step 4: After Submission
. Check if you have received an email acknowledgment within 48 hours after submitting your application for admission.
. The login information provided in the email will allow you to access your Minerva account to view your application status and upload supporting documents.
Step 5: Accept an Offer
. Check the last date for accepting and declining offers.
. Check for next steps with your university after you have accepted an offer (applying for a student residence, applying for a student visa and tuition payments, etc.).
